This “free” alternative isn’t as obvious as the first but, along with those to follow, it is more important.
AntiVirus (AV) Software
Every computer running Microsoft Windows should have AV software installed.
Anti-virus software can identify and block many viruses before they can infect your computer. Once installed, it’s equally important to keep it up to date.
AV software scans your computer for certain patterns that may indicate an infection. The patterns it looks for are based on the signatures, or definitions, of known viruses. Virus authors are continually releasing new and updated viruses, so it is important that you have the latest definitions installed on your computer.
Many computers that I’ve seen recently come with Norton AV pre-installed. It isn’t free though. Usually it provides 3 months of protection before prompting you to pay for continued protection.
I am not a fan of Norton AV products, although they should protect your computer, they are often resource hungry, and not particularly efficient. Others’ comments on Norton AV. There are some similar issues with McAfee products.
What many people don’t realize is that there are free alternatives.
If you’re really getting into the idea of Open Source Software, then you might consider ClamWin Free Antivirus. This is an excellent piece of software, but there is a downside. To quote from the website:
Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.
So, if you’re looking for free AV software that “just works” you might consider:
- AVG Free Edition (for personal use)
I’ve used this program. I’ve also received excellent help from their technical support, and they release virus updates regularly. There is no charge either to download the program, or for future updates.
Some other well-known names are:
- avast! Home Edition
free of charge for HOME users for NON-COMMERCIAL use - Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic
I haven’t used these, so can’t recommend them. If you have used them, or other free alternatives (which don’t expire, or ask for payment for updates) leave a comment.
